The arts are an important component of the learning process at St. Cassian school. We believe that through the exploration and creation of art, we foster our students' creativity, an essential component of high-level problem solving and thinking. With this premise in mind, we incorporate cross-curricular experiences in the arts, as well as use the arts as a pathway to the learning process in the academic areas of the curriculum.
Our first graders, for example, were introduced to the elements of art with a focus on lines. Following the reading of the book Lines That Wiggle, they created a three dimensional art piece with a variety of lines. The creation of the art piece was also followed by a writing describing their original art creation.
It is common to see our students' artistic work fill the hallways of our school. Currently, there are beautiful displays of our students' art creations demonstrating how academic learning can be facilitated through the arts. We would like to thank Mrs. Marigene Rafferty, our wonderful arts facilitator, and the rest of our staff for placing priority on integrating the arts into the daily academic learning process.
